Focusing on conditions affecting the foot and ankle, this course covers regenerative treatments for ligament injuries, Achilles tendonitis, and plantar fasciitis. Participants will acquire skills in biologic injections tailored for foot and ankle disorders.

Hands-on Foot and Ankle Regenerative Medicine Training Course

This programme has been developed for clinicians aiming to incorporate regenerative medicine into the management of foot and ankle disorders, with a focus on common pathologies such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, osteochondral lesions and ankle osteoarthritis. Participants will explore the cellular and molecular mechanisms of tissue repair, examining the roles of PRP and mononuclear cells in promoting regeneration, and will discuss indications,  ontraindications and safety considerations for orthobiologic therapies.

Online learning begins with selfdirected lectures on foot and ankle anatomy, ultrasound physics and standardised imaging protocols. Handson workshops form the practical core of the course. Initial sessions use live patients to consolidate sonoanatomical recognition of osseous, ligamentous and tendinous structures. Under the supervision of expert faculty, clinicians then advance to needleplacement exercises on consenting patients, practising both inplane and outofplane approaches for intratendinous, periosteal and intraarticular injections. Throughout these sessions, strict aseptic technique and realtime verification of injectate distribution are reinforced, ensuring that delegates develop both the psychomotor skills and clinical judgement required for safe, effective treatment.

Ultrasound-Guided Injection

  • Principles of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound: Utilising ultrasound for musculoskeletal interventions requires proficiency in machine settings, probe manipulation, and image interpretation. Detailed knowledge of ultrasound physics, tissue characteristics (e.g., echogenicity), and artefacts (e.g., reverberation, shadowing) ensures accurate diagnosis and precise needle placement.
  • Proper Handling and Positioning: Optimal probe handling and patient positioning are critical for obtaining high-quality ultrasound images. Techniques such as dynamic scanning and multiplanar assessment enhance diagnostic accuracy and procedural success.
  • Needle Guidance: Real-time needle guidance allows for precise localisation and delivery of therapeutic substances into targeted anatomical structures. This minimises procedural complications and maximises therapeutic efficacy.

Manual Injection Techniques

Landmark Identification: Proficiency in identifying anatomical landmarks facilitates safe and effective manual injections, particularly in settings where ultrasound guidance may be limited or unavailable. Mastery of palpation techniques and knowledge of surface anatomy enhance procedural efficiency and patient safety.
